116th Infantry, Third State Color. Primarily recruited among the Irish population of Philadelphia, the 116th was organized during the late summer of 1863. The regiment was assigned to the famous "Irish Brigade" (28th MA, 63rd, 69th, 88th NY). After being re-built by companies from Schuylkill, Philadelphia, Allegheny, and Fayette counties, the old companies were mustered out of service on June 3 and the new companies on July 14, 1865. The third state color was completed in mid-May 1865.
